Alexandrov geometry: A notion of curvature in metric spaces

When: Fri, October 8, 2021 - 3:00pm
Where: Kirwan Hall 1310
Speaker: Prakhar Gupta (UMD, College Park) -
Abstract: Studying curvature is an important aspect of studying geometry. But most notions of curvature are only defined on manifolds, whereas many interesting metric spaces aren't manifolds. We will discuss a notion of curvature, which can be defined on a large collection of metric spaces. We will discuss properties and mention some recent results about this notion of curvature.

Calibrated geometries and special Lagrangians

When: Fri, March 4, 2022 - 2:00pm
Where: Kirwan Hall 1310
Speaker: Vasanth Pidaparthy (UMD, College Park) -
Abstract: Calibrated geometry is a viewpoint in geometry for studying a manifold via distinguished classes of minimal submanifolds. We will define calibrated geometries and see connection to the study of special Lagrangian submanifolds in $\mathbb{C}^n$.
