Kenneth Berg, a man of warmth and kindness, died peacefully in his home in Eldersburg, Maryland on July 25, 2025 at age 86. Ken was the beloved husband of Becky for 30 years, a relationship built on love, laughter and shared adventures. He loved life and people, being in nature, playing bridge, old movies and his favorite songs. And of course, mathematics.

He joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) in the early 1960s. In addition to his research career in Ergodic Theory, Ken was an inspired instructor throughout his career. He was the Director of UMCP’s Summer Program in Research and Learning (SPIRAL), funded by the NSF and NSA, encouraging underrepresented students to excel in theoretical mathematics.

He is survived by wife Rebecca, children Ruth and Leslie, stepchildren Tina, Benjamin, and Nisse, and 14 blended family grandchildren.
