Order Regalia for PhD and Master's Spring Graduates If you are interested in walking across the stage at commencement, you will need doctoral regalia. The Math Department will cover the cost of a gown rental for both master's and PhD graduates. You are responsible for returning the gown to the department the day of the ceremony. The department will facilitate pick up and drop off of the regalia from the UMD Bookstore.
Speakers give 15-minute talks in which they communicate a mathematical idea or method to the general mathematical community. The talks should be aimed at the level of a general mathematical audience (i.e. an audience with some mathematical background, but not consisting of experts in the speaker's field) and should convey an idea worth sharing. Speakers can feel free to discuss their own research, but there is no requirement to do so. The talks will be judged on their content and presentation by a panel of past winners. Winners will receive $500 (subject to change). Graduation Information Session All MATH/STAT/AMSC graduate students (of any year in the program) are welcome to attend the graduation information session which will cover deadlines for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. The Zoom should be 30 minutes. |
Resource Reminders
All PhD students have access to the prospectus repository to upload and view peer's prospectus papers when applying for candidacy. If you have already advanced, it would be helpful to fellow students to upload your prospectus as they prepare for their own candidacy exams.
All students have access to the Math Job Page for internship, fellowship, and career opportunities. Please check periodically.
Find an Advisor Spreadsheet
This resource is designed to help you explore potential research advisors, whose research aligns with your interests. This spreadsheet includes information on faculty research areas, whether they are accepting students, their availability, their students' research, and more.

These pages are designed for the prospective student interested in the Pure Mathematics program or Mathematical Statistics graduate program at Maryland. For similar information about the Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Scientific Computation Program, please visit the AMSC page. For similar information about the Statistical Program, please visit th STAT page.
Our graduate programs in Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Maryland offer rigorous training, a collaborative environment, and opportunities to advance your academic and professional career. Here are some reasons to consider joining us:
Learn more about our graduate programs and the application process:
"They prepared me not only for research but also for the job market. The logical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills I gained in grad school have been highly rewarding in my current position."
"Most students here are eager to help one another. My cohort is really open to collaboration—no one is ‘protective’ of their knowledge. We succeed together."
Read more about our student's experiences here.
If you’re passionate about mathematics and ready to take the next step in your academic and professional journey, we encourage you to apply. Our program will provide you with the tools and skills you need to succeed both in research and in your future career.
The Department of Mathematics runs two graduate programs, the Mathematics Program (MATH) and the Mathematical Statistics Program (STAT). We are also a major participant in Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Scientific Computation Program (AMSC).
We offer a M.A. in Statistics, M.S. in AMSC, and Ph.D. for all three programs with no prior requirement of a Master’s. At this time, we do not offer a M.A. in Mathematics as a terminal degree, but it can be awarded on the way to completing the Ph.D.
For those interested in Mathematics Education (at the K-12 level), please see the Center for Mathematics Education in the College of Education.
These web pages are mostly about the Mathematics Program, but also include many items common to all three of the MATH, AMSC, and STAT programs.

For those outside the MATH/STAT/AMSC programs, we, on rare occasion, staff external teaching assistants in the Fall semesters. We do not hire external TAs during the Spring semesters. If you are interested in applying for a Spring 2025 TAship, please fill out the interest form. There is no guarantee that we will be able to accommodate your request, nor will you likely hear from us until late January. Please direct any questions to .
