This site deals with the exams required for the Ph.D. program or the non-thesis option for the M.A. or M.S. program in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics, or the Applied Mathematics and Applied Statistics concentrations of the AMSC program.

Important note: The qualifying requirements for the Scientific Computation concentration of the AMSC program are totally different. In addition, students in the Applied Mathematics concentration of the AMSC program usually must take one or more exams outside of the mathematics department; see here for further information.

Upcoming Exam Dates

Dates: The January 2020 Qualifying Exams will take place on January 13, 15, & 17, 2020

Time & Location: All examinations (Algebra, Analysis, Applied Statistics, Geometry/Topology*, Mathematical Statistics, Probability) will be held from 9 am - 1 pm in the Mathematics Colloquium Room (Kirwan 3206)

Language Exams (For Math & Stat PhD Students Only)

The fall semester language exam will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 4:30-7:30 pm in Kirwan 3206 (Colloquium Room). The deadline for signing up is October 16, 2019 at noon.

Language Exams (in French, German and Russian) are administered each semester, usually in late October or early November and in March or April. If you intend to take one of these exams, the sign-up is via Google Forms. Please check your email for more information. If you are planning a graduation this year and have not yet passed a language exam, please make sure to take the exam this cycle.
